Ray was a very private man whom we got to know when he married Jane’s sister Marion. This meant that he took on the role of father to her son William who was a young child at that time. He proved to be a great help with William’s upbringing. He and Marion enjoyed going to musical performances including the BBC’s Friday Night is Music Night, and concerts at Hatchlands. In later years he nursed Marion who had various health problems. He was a great supporter of the Inland Waterways Association, editing Cargoes, the local quarterly magazine. He raised the profile of the Association at their events and helped with publicity, including photography. In 2011 his work for the Waterways Association was recognised by the award of a medal. Ray was also an active member of a Civil Service camera club. He was always welcoming when we came to stay at Horsley and will be sadly missed by family, friends and colleagues. Jane and Peter Smith
